Price research, without false precision

Inflation is not your monthly budget.

Use official price trends to decide what to recheck. Use actual city quotes to decide what you can afford. This desk connects the two without pretending that a national average describes your life.

Three numbers that should not be mixed

Price change: CPI

A consumer price index follows a defined basket over time. A year-over-year change compares a month with the same month a year earlier. It is not the price of renting an apartment.

See DOSM’s basket and growth views.

Price level: your city quotes

Compare the same lease length, furnishing, neighborhood, and included bills. A daily hotel rate and a twelve-month rent offer are not interchangeable. Keep deposits and setup costs outside recurring monthly spending.

Inspect the city baseline records, then replace estimates with quotes.

Conversion: your exchange rate

Record a quote in its original currency before converting it. A different conversion rate can change the USD total even if the local price stays the same. Record transfer fees separately.

Use the editable rates and costs in the budget planner.

Illustration, not a country forecast

A $2,000 plan can change without every cost rising.

Suppose your hypothetical monthly plan is $800 rent, $600 everyday spending, $200 insurance, and $400 other costs. You receive a rental quote 10% higher and choose to test a 5% increase in everyday spending. These percentages are assumptions, not published inflation rates.

All amounts in USD; illustrative assumptions only
CategoryStarting amountTested amountDifference
Rent$800$880+$80
Everyday spending$600$630+$30
Insurance$200$200$0
Other costs$400$400$0
Monthly total$2,000$2,110+$110

The plan rises 5.5%, not 10% or 5%. Keeping insurance unchanged here is only an assumption; replace it when a renewal quote arrives. Applying national CPI to the whole budget would hide which costs actually changed.

Build a comparison with your own category amounts. This example does not overwrite your saved plan.

Seven official sources, seven verification starting points

Open the source, note the reference month and scope, and check whether the percentage is month-on-month, year-on-year, or a period average. This page does not rank countries by inflation or claim that a lower rate means a cheaper destination.

Thailand

Thailand Ministry of Commerce

Choose national or regional coverage and record the month, base year, and year-over-year field. A Bangkok series and a national series answer different questions.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Vietnam

National Statistics Office of Vietnam

Separate the monthly year-over-year rate from the year-to-date average; the same release can contain both.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Malaysia

Department of Statistics Malaysia

Use the state and spending-category views when relevant. Check whether the chart shows month-on-month or year-on-year growth.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Philippines

Philippine Statistics Authority

Check geographic coverage. Keep the release date separate from the month that the data describes.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Indonesia

Statistics Indonesia

Find the inflation release on the official statistics portal. Record its period and geographic scope before using it alongside a Bali or Jakarta rental quote.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Cambodia

National Institute of Statistics Cambodia

Check the date and coverage of the downloadable report. Do not assume an older report is current or that its basket matches a furnished long-stay rental.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Laos

Lao Statistics Bureau

Check the reference period in the bureau release. Track the currency of each quote separately; inflation is not an exchange rate.

Source directory, not a live inflation feed. No current rate is asserted here. National CPI is not a city budget or provider quote.

Turn the evidence into a decision

  1. Choose a real city and stay length. Start with a city guide or browse all researched city prices; not every priced city has a full written guide.
  2. Record what each quote includes. Keep its date, currency, deposit, utility exclusions, and cancellation terms. Do not enter account numbers or other sensitive details in planning notes.
  3. Change the affected budget rows. Use official trends as a prompt to check food or transport, not as an automatic rent increase. Do not add inflation again to an already updated quote.
  4. Test the uncomfortable case. Ask whether the move still works if your largest uncertain cost increases. Change your dates, city, or lease commitment if your buffer disappears.
  5. Recheck before paying. Reopen sources and get current provider quotes before a deposit, insurance renewal, or travel commitment.

Common comparison mistakes

Does lower inflation mean a country costs less?

No. Inflation measures change, not the starting price level. For cross-country price-level research, the World Bank International Comparison Program is a different type of evidence; it still is not a quote for your apartment or healthcare.

Are these statistics automatically applied to my saved budget?

No. This directory does not change your costs. You choose which amounts to edit in the standalone planners.

What if a source is delayed or unavailable?

Keep the last known reference date visible in your notes and mark the current figure unverified. Do not fill the gap with another country’s rate or a guessed zero. Use dated provider quotes for the decision in front of you.

Make the next number your own.

Compare editable plans, inspect the records behind a baseline, or plan a scouting trip to test your assumptions.
