Van life planning · Research stage

Before I buy a van.

I'm Nomad Mac. The freedom to spend more time in nature appeals to me, but I want to understand the vehicle, daily routine, and real costs before I commit. I haven't bought a van or started a build.

For now, I'm keeping my apartment and thinking about short trips first. These are working ideas that may change as I learn more.

My current questions

What would make a simple setup work?

01 · VEHICLE

Start with the right van

I'm comparing usable space, condition, repair history, and total ownership cost. A lower purchase price only helps if the vehicle is reliable enough for the trips I want to take.

02 · BUILD

Keep the first version simple

I'm exploring a comfortable place to sleep, ventilation, safe storage, water, and power. My build sketches are concepts. I can revise them before spending money.

03 · DAILY LIFE

Test the routine

Quiet time outdoors is the draw. I also need to think through weather, bathrooms, food, connectivity, parking rules, and how a short trip would feel before imagining longer stays.

Experimental budget · No purchases recorded

How I'm thinking about the numbers

A van budget needs more than a sticker price. These categories are a planning checklist, not quotes or actual expenses. I'll add dated amounts, sources, and assumptions as I verify them.

Vehicle and paperworkPurchase, tax, title, registration, inspection
First repairsMechanical work, tires, fluids, and a repair reserve
Basic setupBed, ventilation, storage, water, and power
Trial trip costsFuel, camping, food, connectivity, and a return-home buffer

Status: research and experimental build budgets. I have not bought a van, paid for a conversion, or reported a trip.

What comes next

The E-150 inspection has changed the build plan. New photos document the existing systems; the next direction is an insulated interior rebuild, ventilation, and separate house power. Electrical diagnosis and layout measurements remain open.
