Living in Siem Reap: separate a temple holiday from a household routine
Siem Reap is worth testing if you want a smaller urban base and enjoy its cultural setting. The useful question is what life looks like when you are no longer filling each day with temples and excursions. Start with an address, normal errands and a realistic plan for healthcare.

Leave the visitor itinerary out of three trial days
Choose a candidate beyond the immediate Pub Street evening circuit and compare it with a more central stay. Check the bedroom after dark, the walk to ordinary groceries and the transport available when you would normally return home. A guesthouse that works for sightseeing may not offer the kitchen, laundry access or quiet you want for months.
Use one trial day for shopping and household errands, another for appointments and a third for the social routine you would repeat. Take the same routes after rainfall when conditions allow. Inspect the access lane, drainage and building entrance; do not judge wet-weather usability from the main road alone.
Ask the owner how internet faults, water interruptions and air-conditioning repairs are handled. Test a video call in the actual room if remote communication matters, and confirm that the backup connection you plan to use works there.
Plan for Siem Reap–Angkor Airport, not an old transfer assumption
Confirm SAI on the flight booking. The airport shuttle operator publishes current booking and departure information; check its pickup and drop-off location against your accommodation rather than assuming door-to-door service. If the arrival does not fit the bus timetable, obtain a separate transfer quote.
Keep the connecting ride, luggage arrangements and total journey time in your travel budget. The useful comparison is the entire trip from your room to check-in, including waiting. A fare copied from an old-airport article may describe a different journey.
When comparing Siem Reap with Phnom Penh, include the travel you personally expect to make for flights, appointments or services. Do not treat those trips as incidental if they recur every month.
Resolve medical access before committing to a longer rental
The FCDO health guidance links a medical-provider directory. Use it to identify contacts, then ask specifically about your treatment, medication supply, language needs, payment and referral arrangements. A nearby clinic's presence does not establish that it can manage an ongoing condition or an emergency.
For household costs, collect a written quote with lease duration, deposit, utility rates and any cleaning or laundry charges. Track ordinary meals separately from café visits and excursions. Keep a dated list of imported items you rely on so the estimate reflects your habits rather than a generic low-cost-living claim.
Siem Reap is a credible option only if the non-holiday routine works. Before planning repeated extensions, establish the appropriate entry category and evidence through the Cambodia passport desk; do not confuse an eVisa approval with permission to retire indefinitely.
