Living in Phuket: choose your part of the island before setting a budget
Phuket is an island with distinct town and beach routines, not one interchangeable neighborhood. Start by deciding how often you need the beach, healthcare, shopping and the airport. The road journeys between those needs can matter more than a property's photographs.
Reviewed September 23, 2026. Transport routes are sourced below; housing comparisons are practical inspection guidance.
Compare Town with the beach routine you would repeat
Test Phuket Town as a base for an urban shopping-and-errands routine. Compare it with the specific west-coast area that interests you, such as Patong, Kata or Karon, rather than assuming all beach addresses offer the same access. If Rawai is your candidate, measure its journeys to your chosen services directly.
For each base, write down which trips require paid transport. Spend one day doing laundry, grocery shopping and a pharmacy visit without a sightseeing itinerary. Include the trip home with bags and an evening return. A home that works only when every day is a holiday is not yet a tested long-stay option.
The airport-to-Town bus and coastal Smart Bus are different routes
Airport Bus Phuket publishes a route between the airport and Phuket Town's Bus Terminal 1. Phuket Smart Bus publishes its airport service through west-coast stops including Patong, Karon and Kata to Rawai. The airport's own transport page also identifies the coastal service. Choose the operator for your destination; an airport bus ticket does not imply a direct ride to every beach.
Read the current operator timetable before booking a late arrival. Calculate the walk or connecting ride between your accommodation and the actual stop, and save an alternative if your flight misses the service. This guide deliberately leaves fares and departure times to the live operator schedule rather than preserving a price that may expire.
Test your airport journey once during the trial if regular travel matters. Record total door-to-door time and the backup fare, not just the bus ride.
Inspect the wet-weather version of the property
Ask how the access road, driveway and entrance behave in heavy rain. For a hillside property, investigate the approach on foot and by the transport you intend to use; a view is not evidence of convenient access. Check for damp, working ventilation, reliable cooling and a safe route to nearby food.
Use Thai Meteorological Department warnings for rain and sea conditions. Do not infer that safe conditions at one beach apply around the island or to a boat route. Follow local beach restrictions and operator decisions.
For the budget, combine a comparable housing quote with utilities, recurring rides, groceries and healthcare arrangements. Request the hospital's current specialty and payment information before relying on proximity alone. The embassy hospital directory is a contact aid, not an endorsement. Keep any seasonal rent change and a missed-flight or disrupted-transfer allowance visible.
Phuket is worth keeping on the shortlist if the ordinary routine works without subsidizing it with holiday spending. Match the intended duration to your passport and Thai visa options before committing to the accommodation.
