Living in Johor Bahru: separate local life, Singapore trips and future rail plans
Start with how often you really intend to cross to Singapore. A home chosen for frequent border journeys may be a different choice from one selected for ordinary Johor Bahru shopping and medical care. Compare both routines using current bookable transport, exact destinations and costs kept in the correct currencies.
Reviewed September 23, 2026. Provider and transport facts are sourced below. Rental inspections and cost comparisons are planning advice; confirm availability and quotes for your dates.
Put shopping and healthcare on separate routes
City Square currently lists 106–108, Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the Ibrahim International Business District. Johor Specialist Hospital lists 39B, Jalan Abdul Samad. Use those precise destinations when relevant to your routine; neither address tells you the journey from a proposed rental.
Separate a border-trip base from a local-living base
If repeated Singapore trips are central to your plans, test your route from the proposed home to the departure point. If most days will be spent in Johor Bahru, prioritize your actual shops and healthcare instead. Compare City Square errands and Jalan Abdul Samad appointments without assuming one housing location serves both equally well.
Shuttle Tebrau and RTS Link are not interchangeable
KTMB publishes booking and boarding instructions for Shuttle Tebrau between JB Sentral and Woodlands. Its FAQ says the passport is used as the boarding pass. The RTS Link developer’s site, checked September 23, 2026, describes testing and preparation for opening. Do not treat that future service as transport you can already rely on.
Build the trip around a ticket you can actually book
Verify your booking via the operator's system for your specific date and direction while maintaining accurate passport details. Arrive before the published boarding cutoff, ensuring your itinerary accounts for station access, immigration procedures, and onward travel. Remember that the short train journey does not represent the full duration required to cross the border.
Check the fare currency and direction
KTMB’s current FAQ lists RM5 from JB Sentral to Woodlands for non-Malaysians and SGD5 for the reverse single journey, with separate return-ticket examples. Check the total shown for your chosen itinerary before purchase. Malaysian citizen fares differ; a foreign resident should not assume those terms apply.
Keep Malaysian living costs separate from Singapore visits
Record Johor Bahru rent and ordinary expenses in ringgit. Keep Singapore purchases and ticket charges in their stated currencies, then convert consistently. Add the cost of all return journeys before comparing homes. Request rent, deposit, utilities, parking and internet terms in writing; a border-adjacent address does not automatically save money.
A local provider to confirm directly
Johor Specialist Hospital’s current website lists 39B, Jalan Abdul Samad, 80100 Johor Bahru. Use its own appointment and contact channels to establish the service you need. A planned medical visit across the border and a local healthcare plan should be evaluated separately.
Plan care in Johor Bahru on its own terms
Verify the selected Johor hospital's service, appointment, entrance, and payment details directly with them. Consult your insurer regarding the specific provider and treatment rather than assuming Singapore coverage applies. Integrate local transport routes into your home comparison while keeping planned cross-border visits distinct from any urgent-care arrangements.
