Living in Hanoi: choose between Old Quarter outings, West Lake walks and metro access

Hanoi works best when you choose a home around the journeys you will repeat. An Old Quarter stay, a West Lake address and a home selected for a metro route answer different needs. Use a trial week to compare those choices with your grocery routine, sleep and confirmed healthcare appointments.

Old Quarter or a West Lake routine?

If your trips center on Hoan Kiem Lake, shortlist an Old Quarter address for convenience; however, if lakeside walks are your priority, separately test a West Lake address instead. Remember that neither location guarantees quietness or easy hospital access. To make informed choices, visit the actual rooms at night and compare grocery shopping and appointment journeys firsthand before booking.

Buy metro tickets as a foreign visitor

Foreign visitors without Vietnamese citizen ID can buy a single-journey paper QR ticket at the counter, according to Hanoi Metro. Its app uses passport identification through Foreigner Registration for day, week and month tickets. Try the journeys you need before buying a longer pass. Wheelchair users can ask station staff about the separate gate. Confirm any concession eligibility rather than assuming a foreign passport qualifies.

Match the home to an operating station

Before traveling, check Hanoi Metro's current route and station information instead of relying on planned network maps. Price the walk or ride at both ends of your rail journey carefully. Finally, arrange a separate transfer from Noi Bai airport directly to your specific accommodation address, ensuring you do not assume connections exist without verification.

The name of a railway project is not proof that every proposed station is open. Use the operator’s current station information when assessing a rental advertised as “near the metro.” For any journey, record the station entrance, platform access, destination exit and final walk. Buy a longer pass only after you have tried the trips you intend to repeat.

Inspect the room you will sleep in

At an Old Quarter rental, listen during your normal sleep hours and compare the actual rooms available. Inspect stairs and any lift yourself. At a West Lake property, walk from the building entrance to the lakeside route you expect to use. For either location, request written electricity, laundry, cleaning and internet charges, plus deposit conditions. Compare the complete quote and the room you inspected.

Build a Hanoi budget from a normal week

Keep separate totals for rent and household bills, groceries and eating out, and trips between your home, Hoan Kiem or West Lake, and your confirmed clinic. Record one-time airport transfers and deposits separately. Compare two actual housing quotes with the same categories. A sightseeing day can help you discover the city, but it is not a reliable model of ordinary monthly spending.

Plan the Times City appointment separately

If you choose Vinmec's Times City hospital at 458 Minh Khai in Vinh Tuy ward, Hanoi, confirm the clinician and appointment first before selecting nearby accommodation. Record the clinic entrance location and transport costs from your chosen address. Additionally, inquire about consultation fees, language assistance, and insurer authorization for your specific medical case to ensure a smooth visit.

Hanoi sources and verification

Before planning a longer stay, review the Vietnam country and passport guides for the entry route that applies to you. Housing availability does not establish permission to remain.
