Living in Dumaguete: build a routine around the university, town services and separate arrival points

For a long-stay trial, compare an address near Hibbard Avenue and the Perdices Street commercial area with one that requires a ride into town. Keep your airport and port journeys separate from that everyday comparison: arriving conveniently is useful, but your recurring errands should determine whether a home works.

Use Hibbard Avenue and Perdices Street as concrete comparison points

Silliman University lists its address on Hibbard Avenue. Its description of the Portal East site places it at Silliman Avenue and Hibbard Avenue, facing the Perdices Street commercial district near Rizal Boulevard. These named locations provide a practical starting area for an exploratory stay; the older university development notice does not establish current shops, rents or opening hours.

Walk the specific route from your candidate home to the groceries and services you would actually use. Carry a shopping bag on the return and note crossings, shade, pavement and places to rest. Visit at your normal errand time and return in the evening. Record what is open rather than assuming proximity to the university means every service is available.

Compare that routine with an accommodation requiring rides into town. Write down the pickup arrangement, wait, fare quoted and return options. If a property is in neighboring Sibulan or Valencia, keep its municipality and service address in your notes rather than treating every listing marketed as “Dumaguete” as the same location. Choose on the combined effort of shopping, appointments and social visits.

Book the correct airport or port connection

The city government identifies Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport and the Port of Dumaguete as separate facilities. Confirm which arrival point your ticket uses and give that exact location to your accommodation or transfer provider. A ferry arrival does not use the airport pickup arrangement.

For a connecting journey, establish the carrier’s current terminal, check-in requirements and baggage arrangements before reserving the road transfer. Ask how you will contact the driver if a flight or sailing changes. Keep the cost of occasional airport and port transfers separate from the local trips you repeat each week; one convenient transfer should not conceal an inconvenient daily base.

Identify the actual electricity and water arrangement

NORECO II is an electricity cooperative. It publishes a main office on Real Street in Dumaguete and collection centers including Sibulan and Valencia. Its service districts cover multiple places; they are not city neighborhood boundaries. At the property, ask whose name is on the electricity account, whether the unit has its own meter and how a landlord calculates any additional charge.

Metro Dumaguete Water describes serving Dumaguete and nearby communities. Confirm the specific building’s connection, billing and service questions through the provider’s customer information. Inspect water pressure and ask about storage and pumping during interruptions. Check which apartment outlets and building systems, if any, have backup power.

Compare written quotes covering rent, deposit, minimum stay, utilities, internet and cleaning. For a furnished rental, record what is included and inspect cooling equipment and mobile reception in the unit. During the trial, save shopping and transport receipts and enter them in the free budget tool below. Keep a separate allowance for irregular trips and appointments so a quiet week does not become an unrealistic monthly estimate.

Arrange the specific care you need before choosing housing around it

The Department of Health directory identifies a Silliman University Medical Center DOTS service on Aldecoa Drive/Laguna Street. That listing supports a specific health-service location, not the availability of every hospital department. For your own needs, contact the hospital about the relevant clinician, appointment, payment arrangements and insurance before deciding that a nearby home solves your care requirements.

Test the journey to the confirmed appointment address, including the return. Keep provider contact details accessible and ask the provider how to arrange care outside routine appointment hours. Do not substitute the university campus address for a medical appointment location.

Use PAGASA’s current forecasts and warnings for walks, transfers and onward travel. Ask residents and the property manager about previous water entry and street access after heavy rain, then inspect when conditions are safe. Use the route and budget tools before, during and after the exploratory stay to compare what you expected with what the actual address delivers.
